Karen's Corner February 2015
I'm going on vacation. Again. This time it will be a long ski weekend in Crested Butte. In trying to justify taking another day off, I did a little research and have found that by taking vacations I am doing a lot of good for my health, and therefore setting a good example around here. Studies have shown that vacations decrease stress. Well, duh, right? But they also show direct benefits for one's health.
Perhaps one of the best pieces of evidence on the benefits of vacations can be found in the famous Framingham Heart Study, the long-term ongoing cardiovascular study that began in 1948 to analyze adult subjects who were at risk of heart disease. When the study looked at the effects of vacations from following subjects over a nine-year period they found a positive correlation between more frequent vacations and longer healthier lives.
So, in honor of American Heart Month, I guess I'll just have to do what's best for my health and go on on a trip.
