Home Remedies for Spring Allergies
Allergies are starting to ramp up, so don't let them get you down! Here are a few home remedies to combat all of the sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose and puffy face.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey-- In the morning, start your day with a cup of "tea" consisting of hot water, 1 - 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV), 1 teaspoon of local Honey and a slice of lemon. ACV is known to flush the lymphatic system and decrease mucous production. Think: less congestion and drippy nose. Also, adding local honey allows your body adapt to the allergens that are present in the environment where you live. So choose Colorado local in order to protect yourself from what grows and blooms in our own back yard.
2. Neti pot use-- The Neti pot can be a great resource for people with lots of sinus pressure and headaches, congestion, and post nasal drip. Using a sterile saline solution, you can rinse your sinuses as much as 1 time a day to three times a week in peak allergy season in order to decrease irritation and allergy sensitivity.
3. Probiotics-- Allergies can also be the result of an imbalance in the immune system that causes the body to react too strongly to certain stimuli. Because the gut is so closely related to our immunity, boosting the good bacteria is essential to reducing the incidence of allergies. Eating fermented foods like kimchi or sauerkraut, drinking kefir or kombucha, or taking a high quality probiotic can be a game-changer for your immune system this allergy season.
